BACKGROUND
As India is approaching
towards achieving the long-term strategy to reach net-zero by 2070, the Indian
mining sector has identified several ways to build sustainability into mining
by implementing sustainable practices such as shifting to renewable energy
sources, utilizing low-carbon decarbonization strategy, adopting cleaner
vehicles, technological innovations in transportation of minerals and metals
and reducing waste.
The growing demand for
renewable energy technology and electrification infrastructure are critical for
achieving net-zero targets, which heavily relies on mining of critical
minerals. With the growing demand for critical mineral, their method of
extraction and processing will play an equally important role. Supporting
sustainability in mining through policymaking, improved mining practices,
advancing recycling, and innovation will be a key aspect of a successful energy
transition. Hence, it is necessary to develop a roadmap, to address the issues
and integrate sustainability for decarbonizing the sector.
Mining businesses today
operate in a complex environment, driven by global trade disruptions,
geopolitics, climate imperatives, civil society expectations, and global
competition. In a quest for a holistic approach to sustainability, the Indian
Mining Industry is undergoing a transformative
journey to integrate Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) practices. Along
with this, it is necessary to implement innovation in data-driven emerging
technologies, automation and Internet of Things (IoT) systems, to navigate the
complexities and align their operations to match stakeholders’ expectations.
In this background,
FIMI is organizing the ‘Sustainable
Mining Summit 2025’ at Hotel Mayfair Lagoon, Bhubaneswar on 26-27 May,
2025. The summit aims to deliberate on various mining issues concerning
sustainability, which will result in formulation of road-map for sustainable
mining in India. Various stakeholders, including Government agencies,
regulators, industry stalwarts, practicing managers, NGOs, academicians and
strategists are expected to come together on this platform to deliberate on
these very important issues.
